The schizandra berry is the fruit of a herb with the botanical name Schisandra chinensis. This herb is known by a number of names including Chinese magnolia vine, as well as gomishi in Japan, omija in Korea and wu wei zi in China. 

The spelling schizandra is now more common, although it may also be seen as both schisandra and shisandra. The berries are dried for use in herbal medicine.

The schizandra berry is the fruit of a woody vine that predominantly grows in east Asia, in an area of north eastern China. There is also one variety that grows in eastern USA. The schizandra berry is highly regarded by practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, and is a good general tonic.

The Chinese name wu wei zi means 5 flavors fruit, because in the traditional Chinese medicine they say that this herb embodies all five flavor groups, sweet, sour, bitter, pungent and salty.

Their medical lore teaches that the peel and the flesh of the fruit is both sweet and sour, the seed is both pungent and bitter and the whole fruit is salty.

Although schizandra has a preventative role to assist the immune system, traditional Chinese medicine warns not to use it to treat acute viral or bacterial infections, such as acute influenza, pneumonia or bronchitis.

Please check with your doctor before using it if you are taking any drugs at all, to see if it is advisable for you to use it. It is known to increase the effect of barbiturates, and increase the effect of benzo-diazepine tranquilizers such as Librium or Valium.

This may allow patients to take lower doses of drugs that are known to be addictive. Check with your doctor to discuss this if you are taking these drugs, as this herb may aid you to cut down the amount of the drugs you are taking.

One of the effects of chronic stress, which causes high levels of cortisol to be circulating in your system is an increase of fat around the belly as well as a number of other health problems.
